Jan Almon Obituary
Janet Sharon Newton Almon, 80, of Seguin, Texas, died Sunday, 24 May 2026, at Avir Nursing Care.
Jan was born 29 October 1945 in Chicago, Illinois, to William Edward and Mildred Faye Sorenson Newton. The family later moved to Tucson, Arizona, where Jan graduated from Rincon High School in 1963. She received a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism from the University of Arizona in 1967.
Jan was married twice, to Brian Almon and Sean McNulty; both marriages ended in
divorce. She had no children.
Jan’s career focused on communications, touching on nearly every aspect of the craft. During college, she interned at the Tombstone Epitaph and for two summers for the Dallas Times Herald. After earning her degree, she worked in television, radio, and newspaper reporting. She later served as a college public information officer,
advertising agency public relations director and creative director, freelance writer and
advertising agency owner. She wrote the commemorative book for the opening of the Dallas/Fort Worth regional airport. While at Honeywell Space systems, she led a communications team for the International Space Station.
After living in San Antonio and Phoenix, Jan returned to Dallas and established herself as an independent marketing communications consultant and writer. She authored or contributed to numerous publications, for businesses, public agencies, and nonprofit organizations. Her work reflected a lifelong talent for communicating complex ideas clearly and effectively.
Moving to Seguin to care for her mother, who died in 2017, Jan was involved with the Seguin Art League and the Silver Center.
Jan enjoyed travel, and spoke of being “banned in Barcelona,” and of two sailboat trips around the Virgin Islands. She also enjoyed the arts, and good food. She was an accomplished potter and cook.
A devoted animal lover, Jan is survived by her dogs, Joy and Mandy, and her cat, Hope. Her surviving human family comprises two first cousins, Don Sorenson of Houston, Texas, and Karl Sorenson of Carlsbad, California, and their families. Close friends and neighbors include Andy Engelhardt of Chandler, Arizona, John Arnold, and Brandon Galvan, of Seguin.
A celebration of Jan’s life will be scheduled at a later date. Family and friends are
encouraged to share their favorite memories of Jan.
