Obituary For Michael Melvin Mattox

Michael Melvin Mattox was born to Maxwell Mattox and Latane (nee Balzar) on July 16, 1949, in Ponca City, Oklahoma. He was raised in Tonkawa, Oklahoma. At age 7, his parents were killed in automobile accident, and he was then raised by his paternal grandparents, Hugh and Lillian Mattox of Tonkawa. He graduated from Tonkawa High School in Oklahoma in 1967. In 1971 he graduated from Northwestern Oklahoma University with a marketing and business degree.

He started his career in 1971 at Kansas Blue Cross and Blue Shield, starting as a "Roving Representative" and retiring in 2007 as President and CEO. During his tenure, he was the Director of Sales, VP of Marketing, Executive Vice President, and then CEO and President. As CEO, he was also Director of Prime Therapeutics and Chairman of Advance Life Insurance of Kansas.

While living in Weir, KS, and working in the Pittsburg, KS office, he was active in the Black Diamond Lodge in Weir, Scottish Rite and Shriners in Pittsburg, Kansas. He also was elected President of USD 247 school board, in Cherokee, KS. He found much enjoyment in coachingLittle League that his sons were participants.

He loved his Oklahoma Sooners and enjoyed playing golf and fishing with family and friends. When asked what his greatest accomplishment was, he answered with 2 words, "My Family".

He is survived by his wife, Diana (nee Noteware) of the home in New Braunfels, TX - two sons, Michael Mattox and wife Linda of Burlington, KS - Mark Mattox and wife Stephanie of New Braunfels, TX - Grandchildren, Christian Sanders and wife Tylr of Sparta, WI - Elizabeth and husband Tony Acuna, Of Tulsa, OK - Lisa and husband Daniel Gallagher of Auburn, NE - Aubrey Mattox of Chanute, KS - Avery Mattox of Auburn, NE - and Brodie Koenig of New Braunfels, TX - and 14 great grandchildren - Sister, Marsha Ledwig, Medford, OK - 2 nieces Lucinda Ledwig, Medford, OK - Shelly and Gary Wallace, Sand Spring, Ok - and 1 nephew Michael and Susan Noteware, Stillwater, OK.

After three years of major health issues, Mike succumbed to stomach cancer at his home in New Braunfels, TX, June 9 th, 2026, with his wife and sons present at his bedside. Mike was cremated by his wishes, and the family will hold a Memorial Service in Burlington, KS, July 11th. The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Well Family Church, PO Box 244, Burlington, KS 66839
